This Isn't a Job Board. This is a Map to a New World.

If you’ve found your way here, you’ve likely felt it: the quiet hum of dissonance in the modern world of work. The feeling that your “job” is disconnected from what truly matters. That the economy we live in is built on extraction—of our time, our creativity, and our planet.

We’re told to find a job, climb a ladder, and collect a paycheck. But what about when that job feels like a "bullshit job," as David Graeber called it—a role that even you suspect is pointless, unnecessary, or makes the world worse? What about when the platforms we use become "enshittified," as Cory Doctorow describes, prioritizing profit over people at every turn?

This system isn't broken; it's working exactly as designed—to concentrate power and wealth, not to foster human flourishing.

So, what’s the alternative?

We are building it. Welcome to the Community Role Network: a living, breathing blueprint for a Solarpunk future. This is not a list of vacancies. This is a map of the essential, meaningful work of building a Symbiotic Commonwealth—a society where our daily activities regenerate our ecology, nurture our communities, and feed our souls.

‍

From "Jobs" to "Roles": A Fundamental Shift

In a capitalist framework, a Job is a box you fit into to sell your labor for a wage. It often comes with hierarchy, alienation, and a primary goal of generating profit for someone else.

In our Symbiotic Commonwealth, a Role is a dynamic, socially necessary function you perform for your community and your own fulfillment. It is:

  • A Calling: An expression of your unique gifts and passions.
  • A Contribution: A direct service to the well-being of your people and planet.
  • A Connection: A way to build deep, collaborative relationships with others.

You won't find "Marketing Manager" or "Growth Hacker" here. Instead, you'll find roles like Place-Making Storyteller, Soil Life Tender, and Restorative Circle Keeper. These aren't fancy titles; they are descriptions of the actual work of care, creation, and stewardship that sustains a thriving society.

Explore the Five Domains of Life

This network is organized using the "Circles of Sustainability" framework, which recognizes that a healthy society attends to all aspects of life. Think of it as a garden with five interdependent plots:

1. The Political Realm
‍

The work of how we decide to live together.
This is where we practice collective self-governance, justice, and dialogue.

  • Example Roles: Dialogue Mediator, Participatory Process Designer, Restorative Circle Keeper

2. The Economic Realm
‍

The work of meeting our material needs in harmony with the Earth.
This is where we manage production, exchange, and resources for resilience, not profit.

  • Example Roles: Circular Fabricator, Mutual Aid Network Weaver, Commons Fund Steward

3. The Cultural Realm

‍
The work of weaving a beautiful, inclusive tapestry of community life.
This is where we create, celebrate, remember, and find belonging.

  • Example Roles: Community Myth-Maker, Bridge-Weaver, Memory-Meal Chef

4. The Ecological Realm

‍
The work of active, intelligent participation in the web of life.
This is the practical work of stewardship, symbiosis, and healing our planet.

  • Example Roles: Watershed Steward, Mycoremediator, Urban Miner

5. The Spiritual Realm

‍
The work of nurturing our inner world and ethical compass.
This is where we cultivate meaning, connection, compassion, and awe.

  • Example Roles: Intuition Cultivator, Awe-Walk Guide, Shadow Integration Facilitator

How to Engage With This Network

1. Browse and Explore.
Look through the roles not as a list of qualifications you lack, but as a landscape of possibilities. Which roles make you lean in? Which ones spark your curiosity? This is a tool for discovery.

2. Reflect on Your "Value Core."
Think about your current work. What 20% of it actually creates genuine value for people or the planet? That "value core" is a clue to your future role. A "Customer Service Agent" might have the heart of a Conflict Resilience Gardener. A "Project Manager" might be a natural Flow Coordinator.

3. Start Where You Are.
You don't need to wait for a revolution to begin. This is about prefigurative politics—building the new society in the shell of the old.

  • See a role that resonates? Embody it now. Start being a Play-Instigator in your local park. Practice being a Gratitude Ritualist at your family dinner table. Act as a Knowledge Sharer in your friend group.

4. Connect and Co-Create.
This network is a starting point for connection. Use it to find collaborators, start projects, and form "pods" around shared roles. The goal is to weave a visible web of mutual support.

‍

This is an Invitation

The Community Role Network is more than a list; it is an invitation to a different way of being. It’s an argument that a better world is not only possible but is already being imagined and built in the hearts and minds of people like you.

Your unique combination of skills, passions, and experiences is needed. Your journey from a job to a calling is the very stuff of revolution.

So, dive in. Explore the map. Find your role, and let’s get to work—the real work of our lives.
